5 Ways To Ensure Your Dog’s Halloween Is Fun, Not Scary

Halloween is just around the corner and although all of the ghosts and goblins can be fun for kids and adults alike, your dog may have a different perspective on this spooky holiday.  These tips will help make sure your dog has as much fun as you do!

Are you Laughing with Him or at Him?
You may think the hottest new dog costume is great but unless your pup is used to wearing dog clothes, he may not understand the appeal of becoming a pumpkin or a ghost for a night.  In some cases, wearing a costume can cause extreme stress for our four-legged family member. Unless your dog really likes to be dressed up, skip the costume. He or she won’t mind!

Candy is Dangerous
Kids love to get candy for Halloween, which means there will be lots of chocolate around the house. Chocolate is toxic to dogs so make sure the candy is out of reach at all times. If you want Fido to join in the fun, buy some Halloween themed treats from the local pet store or even make some at home!

Be Aware of the Door
Seeing all the costumes can be fun, but having so many people come to the door can be stressful to your dog-especially when it’s a witch, a vampire and a monster. Have your dog contained in a separate part of the house or if they will be with you when you greet the Trick- or-Treaters, he or she should be wearing a leash so they can’t sneak out when the door is open! Your dog should also be wearing current ID tags in case they do escape.

Walk Early
Since your dog may not understand why the neighborhood kid he loves so much has suddenly turned into a gremlin, make sure to exercise your dog before dusk. If your dog is afraid of any Halloween decorations, alter your route to avoid the extra spooky houses.

Watch the Flame
Candles and Jack-o-lanterns are great, but are often in reach of wagging tails. Make sure all open flames are placed in a safe, dog-free area so he or she stays safe and nothing catches on fire!

Remove your dog from any scary Halloween situation completely by booking them for an overnight boarding stay at Dogtopia. They will enjoy a restful, comfortable night, free of any ghosts or goblins, under the watchful eye of our caring team.
