{"id":199,"date":"2015-07-03T00:29:03","date_gmt":"2015-07-03T00:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dogtopia.com\/bloomfield\/?p=199"},"modified":"2018-12-20T15:30:10","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T20:30:10","slug":"board-dog-4th-july-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dogtopia.com\/bloomfield\/board-dog-4th-july-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Should Board Your Dog During 4th of July Celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">As much as we all may love fireworks, we need to recognize that our dog friends are less enthusiastic about them.\u00a0 Some dogs are extremely noise sensitive, which makes 4<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 115%\">th<\/sup><span style=\"line-height: 115%\"> of July celebrations a nightmare for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Most owners can tell if their pup is sensitive to fireworks, but signs to look for include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Cowering during explosions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Climbing onto their owner or pressing up against their owner<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Constant barking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Drooling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Hiding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Normally happy &amp; social dogs can become stressed by fireworks, and run the risk of injuring themselves, others, or running away.\u00a0 Dogs have been known to break free from their homes during 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July celebrations, and statistics show that dog shelters see the largest number of intakes on July 5<sup>th<\/sup>, the day after our biggest fireworks displays of the year.\u00a0 It stands to reason you should exercise the utmost caution around the time of year when neighbors and cities are setting off large fireworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/positively.com\/contributors\/10-safety-and-calming-tips-for-dogs-during-fireworks\/\"><span style=\"color: windowtext\">tips to keep your dog calm during fireworks displays<\/span><\/a>, from Victoria Stillwell at Positively:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 115%;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;border: 1pt none windowtext;padding: 0in\">10 Tips for providing a safe July 4th for your Canine Household:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it\u2019s hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dogs to a fireworks display is never a good idea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can\u2019t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. (I once had a dog who climbed in the bathtub during windstorms.) If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate or lowering the blinds can also be helpful. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%\">Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar.
