Familiar folks suddenly look completely different in costumes. Giant inflatable monsters appear on lawns overnight. Kids wearing masks, shouting with joy, run up the driveway. Even the house may suddenly be filled with decorations that move, light up, or make unexpected noises.

At Dogtopia of Easton, we’re all about helping dogs live long, healthy, happy lives—and preparation can make a big difference in how your pup experiences spooky season. Here are some ways you can start getting your dog ready before October 31st arrives.

Ding-Dong! Desensitizing Your Dog to the Doorbell

For many dogs, the doorbell already brings so much excitement because it means SOMEONE IS HERE! Add dozens of trick-or-treaters dressed in costume throughout the evening, and that excitement can quickly become overwhelming.

Instead of waiting until Halloween night, begin practicing ahead of time.

Start by playing a recording of your doorbell or knocking sound at a very low volume while your dog is relaxed. Pair the sound with something positive, such as a small treat, praise, or a favorite activity. As your dog becomes comfortable, gradually increase the volume.

You can then practice with the real doorbell. Have a family member or friend ring it once while you reward calm behavior. Over multiple short sessions, practice someone ringing the bell, opening the door, having a brief conversation, and closing it again.

You can also teach your dog an alternative behavior, such as going to a bed or designated “place” when the doorbell rings. The goal isn’t necessarily to make your dog love the doorbell—it’s to help make the sound more predictable and less overwhelming.

There’s also another concern: door safety. A frightened or excited dog can slip through an open front door in seconds.

If your dog will be home, consider setting up a comfortable space away from the front entrance with their bed, water, favorite toys, and calming background noise. Keep Halloween candy—especially chocolate and anything containing xylitol—completely out of reach.

At Dogtopia of Easton, our Canine Coaches practice “door desensitization” multiple times a day with your pups! If you want to keep a consistent approach, try using the word “back!” when you open the door. Your pup is given this command in the playrooms and they know it means to sit back behind a chalk line that we draw around the door.

If your dog becomes highly stressed, barks excessively, hides, or refuses treats during practice, make the exercise easier. Desensitization should happen gradually rather than forcing a dog to “get used to it.”

Consistency is key with any training session. Be sure to get your entire household on the same page with this technique, so they learn even quicker!

That Skeleton Wasn’t There Yesterday!

Halloween decorations can be surprisingly intimidating for dogs.

Think about what your neighborhood looks like from their perspective. Suddenly there are enormous skeletons standing in yards, ghosts hanging from trees, pumpkins lining sidewalks, inflatable creatures moving in the wind, flashing lights, and decorations that unexpectedly make noise or move.

Allow your dog to investigate new decorations at their own pace.

Start at a comfortable distance and reward relaxed behavior. If your dog wants to approach, allow them to move closer without pulling or forcing them toward the object. Treats can help create a positive association with something unfamiliar.

For decorations in your own home, consider introducing them gradually rather than transforming the entire house overnight. Let your dog see stationary decorations first before turning on anything that moves, flashes, talks, or makes noise.

Remember: curiosity is great, but your dog doesn’t need to interact with a decoration to successfully become comfortable around it.

Why Does My Human Suddenly Look Like That?!

Costumes can be confusing for dogs because they dramatically change the way familiar people look and move.

Masks are especially challenging because dogs rely heavily on body language. Large hats, capes, wigs, bulky clothing, face paint, and costumes that change a person’s silhouette can make someone your dog knows suddenly appear unfamiliar.

Before Halloween, practice!

Put on one piece of your costume at a time while allowing your dog to observe. Pair the experience with treats, praise, play, or another positive activity. Once your pup is comfortable, gradually add additional pieces.

If you’ll be wearing a mask, let your dog investigate it while you’re not wearing it first. Then hold it near your face, briefly put it on, remove it, and reward calm behavior. Place it in a common area, like a living room, and every time they investigate the mask, reward your pup!

The same principle applies if your children will be wearing costumes around the dog.

And don’t forget about your pup’s costume! If your dog will be dressing up, introduce their costume ahead of time. Start with very short sessions and plenty of rewards. If your dog freezes, repeatedly tries to remove it, tucks their tail, or otherwise appears uncomfortable, skip the costume. A festive bandana can be just as adorable!

Remember, any kind of over-excitement is scary for a pup. Be sure to not “over-celebrate” a job well-done with your pup. Give them calm praise immediately and continue to repeat over and over!

Let Them Skip the Spooky Stuff!

While you’re home handing out candy and enjoying the neighborhood festivities, your dog doesn’t have to participate.

Consider an overnight stay at Dogtopia of Easton for Halloween!

Instead of spending the evening listening to a constantly ringing doorbell and watching masked strangers appear at the house, your pup can enjoy a familiar environment with people and canine friends they already know.

After a day filled with exercise, socialization, and play, our boarding pups can settle in for the evening away from the commotion happening at home.

It can also make Halloween easier for pet parents. You can greet trick-or-treaters, open the door, host friends and family, and enjoy the evening without worrying about your dog becoming overwhelmed or slipping outside.

For dogs who already love coming to Dogtopia, Halloween boarding can turn a potentially stressful night into something much more familiar: a sleepover with their BFFFs!

Start Preparing Before October 31st

Desensitization works best when it happens before your dog is faced with the real event. Start small, keep sessions short, use positive reinforcement, and pay attention to what your dog’s body language is telling you.

Every dog is different. Some pups will happily watch a parade of tiny superheroes and witches walk up the driveway. Others would much rather be somewhere quiet and familiar—and that’s perfectly okay.

Our goal isn’t to make dogs tolerate scary situations. It’s to give them positive experiences, choices, and an environment where they can feel safe.

This spooky season, make a Halloween plan that works for both ends of the leash.

If your pup would rather spend Halloween playing with their furry friends than answering the door for trick-or-treaters, contact Dogtopia of Easton to learn more about daycare and overnight boarding availability.

Happy Howl-o-ween from your Canine Coaches at Dogtopia of Easton!

Halloween is full of things humans love—costumes, decorations, spooky sounds, candy, and a steady stream of trick-or-treaters at the door.
