As a dog owner, we typically want our dogs to get along with other dogs so we can have fun watching them play with other dogs. It can be embarrassing to have to be the one with the dog that doesn’t get along.<\/p>\n

An important factor of raising a puppy is socialization. It\u2019s important that as a puppy, dogs experience exposure to a variety of people, places, and situations. The humane society notes<\/a>: \u201cThe greatest window of learning in a dog\u2019s life starts around 3 weeks of age and closes between 16 and 20 weeks. This period allows puppies to be exposed to a wide variety of sights, sounds, smells, and sensations without becoming fearful. Puppies who miss out on these experiences may never learn to be comfortable around unfamiliar things, paving the way for anxiety, fear, and aggression later on in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

All’s not lost if you didn’t get to socialize your dog in those time periods – but you will likely have to be more patient in getting your dog to socialize.<\/p>\n

There are dog breeds that benefit further from socialization than others. Socialization is especially important for guard dogs. Breeds such as, German Shepherds, Pitbulls, Dobermans, and other protective dog breeds, all extremely benefit from socialization. The exposure to people, places, and situations, allow for the dog to learn to suppress it\u2019s \u201cfighting\u201d instinct. By socializing these breeds at a young age, it decreases the chance for violent behavior.<\/p>\n
