It’s summer, and that means lots of sun and fun outside during this time of year! While dogs absolutely love going out in this weather, your dog will be able to enjoy it better with these tips to stay cool.
Yard beach party!
Watering the grass doesn’t have to be a chore! It takes just three simple ingredients to make it fun:
- Your dog
- The grass
- A sprinkler
While your sprinkler does its job, your dog can run around and enjoy the cool fresh water. Have your family join in the fun and it’s a day at the beach without travelling far! If your dog’s breed is best suited for cold temperatures (ie. huskies, etc.), fill up a kiddie pool with ice and they’ll be rolling around in it to stay cool.
Brushing does more than keeping a neat coat
Brushing can actually do wonders for your dog’s fur and his body temperature. Fur keeps the heat in during the winter months while letting the air circulate into the skin. By brushing frequently, you can prevent mats and let your dog’s skin breathe, also preventing the hot air from getting trapped in.
Prepare some cool drinks!
It’s important to keep your dog hydrated, and putting ice cubes in their water bowl can help keep their drink refreshingly cool to drink. Fill a popsicle tray with lots of water and pop it in the freezer for a few hours, and they’ll be licking away at it all day!
Minding your time
Timing is important when it comes to taking your dog out for his walk. During the fall and winter seasons, you can take your dog out for that bit of fresh air, but during the hot season, it’s best to keep your walks short. Walking your dog in the morning and close to sunset prevents them from being exposed to the sun too long, as dogs are more susceptible to heat strokes.
Dogs that are prone to hot weather are those with double coats like shepherds, huskies and shelties, as well as dogs with flat faces.
Bring your dog to daycare!
If you still want your dog to enjoy a day of play without going out in the heat, bring them on over to Dogtopia Mississauga for daycare. Our daycares are climate-controlled, making it cool for them to play all day with their friends!
