The only way to alleviate this feeling is through trust, and that trust isn\u2019t built through words, but actions. It comes from knowing that there are trained employees monitoring their pup in a safe and controlled environment, and that potential risks are being managed with plans for when the unexpected happens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Below are 7 things to look for when exploring dog daycares \u2014 all of which are incorporated here at Dogtopia of North Portland \u2014 that can help build trust through safety and security.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet & Greet\u2019s<\/span><\/h4>\n

Meet & Greet\u2019s are the easiest way to tell if a facility is safe or not. Any facility that will take any dog without a proper evaluation is a red flag because it means they\u2019re not managing risk. This is why Meet & Greet\u2019s are mandatory at Dogtopia of North Portland: to not only understand your pup better, but to make sure all dogs will be safe while in open play. During the Meet & Greet, we get to know your pup one-on-one so that we can individualize the care they receive while staying with us; at the same time, you receive a tour of our facility to help answer any questions you may have.<\/span><\/p>\n

Room Divisions<\/span><\/h4>\n

Dividing the dogs by size not only makes the rooms more manageable for the Canine Coach in charge of the room, but ensures that your dog is safely socializing with appropriate play groups. At Dogtopia of North Portland, we divide dogs by size first and then temperament, or energy levels. By doing this, it creates a safe environment by reducing the risk of predatory drift and accidental injury so pups can focus on what they do best: playing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Safety Features<\/span><\/h4>\n

Every safe facility should have carefully thought-out features to give parents ease of mind while away from their pup. Features such as cleaning procedures, facility design and general safety protocols are examples of some of the ways daycares can ensure a dog\u2019s safety while in their care. At Dogtopia of North Portland, we have extensive cleaning protocols using dog-safe cleaning products to keep the facility clean and sanitary for all pups that walk through our doors. We also have additional safety features, including rubberized floors that ease pressure normally placed on joints, scuffle buttons and preventative methods for negative dog interactions, webcams for you to view your pup 24\/7, and doors that open inwards instead of outwards (in case some smart pups know how to open doors). <\/span><\/p>\n

Supervision + Training<\/span><\/h4>\n

When a dog attends daycare, it isn\u2019t guaranteed that the pups are consistently monitored or that the staff receive proper training on how to handle dogs. At Dogtopia of North Portland, our staff are required to complete 90 hours of training and pass 3 exams before becoming a certified Canine Coach. Additionally, all dogs in a playroom are supervised by at least 1 Canine Coach at all times whose goal is to ensure that play remains safe and that dogs remain well-regulated. This ensures your dog\u2019s safety by ensuring someone is there to help redirect and discourage unsafe play.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transparent Communication <\/span><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s important to receive regular updates on how your dog is doing at daycare so you understand the progress they\u2019re making or any health issues that may arise. At Dogtopia of North Portland, our Front Desk Coordinators are trained to communicate to you any updates about your pup through our 24\/7 two-way texting service. This is available to every pet parent, free of charge, so that you can communicate with us any important information as well as our Front Desk staff being able to communicate any updates about your pup to you. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wellness Checks<\/span><\/h4>\n

At Dogtopia of North Portland we conduct a wellness check to understand your pup\u2019s health better. Every pup receives a wellness check once before entering daycare and once before leaving daycare. A wellness check is a nose-to-tail pet of your pup to check for lumps, bumps, scratches, or marks \u2014 anything that may come up in or out of daycare. If we ever notice anything unusual, we note it on your pet\u2019s profile and update you as soon as possible, so that you\u2019re in the loop on your pup\u2019s heath.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vaccinations + Spay\/Neuter<\/span><\/h4>\n

Vaccinations and alteration (spayed\/neutered) are an essential aspect of safety as they prevent the spread of various infections and diseases, as well as avoiding unplanned breeding accidents. At Dogtopia of North Portland, we require Bordetella, DHPP, and Rabies vaccinations and that your pup be altered before they can enter open-play. While in our care, our primary focus is to ensure your dog is comfortable and thriving, and by requiring vaccinations and alteration, it allows our Canine Coaches to direct their focus to just that.<\/span><\/p>\n
