We all know that when it comes to eating, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The same is true for your dog. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) some 56% of the nation’s dogs are overweight or obese based on results from a 2018 survey. That’s a lot of heavy pets.

Those extra pounds can lead to serious diseases like diabetes, kidney and heart disease, arthritis and some forms of cancer. How do you keep the weight off your canine pal? Just like it does for humans, a two-prong approach works best. Diet and exercise.

APOP says that as an alternative to highly-processed store bought treats offer things like baby carrots, green beans, celery, broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, blueberries, apples or bananas. These naturally nutritious tasty tidbits are a healthy option for many dogs.

A fun activity for our dogs at Dogtopia of Arcadia is “bobbing” for apples. The dogs love it! This is something you can easily do at home and it’s especially fun in the summer- the dogs get right in the pool to eat the apples. We fill baby pools with water then cut up apples and put them in the pools (always make sure to slice the apples and remove the seeds and core).

When it comes to fitness there’s a lot you can do with your pup to keep them in shape. Take a hike. Dogs love to explore the outdoors. The American Kennel Club says take your pup for a swim. Most dogs love the water, and swimming is great for dogs with joint problems. A life jacket can help your dog stay in the water longer for an optimum cardio workout. Play ball! At Dogtopia of Arcadia we often have friendly games of baseball. Our pups love the combination of fetch and chase it offers.

Dog daycare is always a great way to make sure your dog is getting the exercise he or she needs. At Dogtopia we exercise your pup and ensure they get proper socialization and ample playtime. And whether you’re a dog or it’s human- what’s more fun than spending quality, active play time with friends?
