Did you make a New Year’s Resolution this year? Many of us did. How about your dog? You can help your pup make 2020 the best year yet with just a few easy resolutions!
Getting more exercise is on a lot of human’s lists but, no surprise, it’s also a great resolution for your dog. You can resolve to take your dog on more walks, pledge to take more trips to the dog park or set aside time to play ball in the backyard more often. A great way to ensure your pup gets more exercise (and much-needed human and canine socialization) is dog daycare. Our pups at Dogtopia have a blast playing every day in our climate-controlled playrooms and our trained Canine Coaches are there to ensure the play is safe and appropriate.
Another box to check on the resolution list is making sure your pup gets more mental stimulation. The American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests playing mentally challenging games with your dog every day. You can buy commercial puzzle toys but hide and seek with your pup works great! Providing your dog with a variety of toys prevents boredom but you don’t have to constantly buy new playthings. Rotate toys weekly and the toys will always seem fresh and exciting. The AKC also suggests teaching a new trick each month. It’s a great way to get in some physical and mental stimulation as well as fun for you and your pup.
How about making a resolution to hug your pup more often? Many of us have too much stress in our lives and resolve to do something about that. Pet parents have an easy antidote for stress. Studies show pets help reduce stress by hugging, petting and playing with them. It’s a win-win for both of you!
Finally, who hasn’t resolved to eat better? One way to do that for your dog is by providing healthy snacking. We recently served homemade Sweet Potato Jerky at our “Healthy Treat Party” and our pups loved it! It’s super simple: heat your oven to 250 degrees, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, cut a sweet potato lengthwise into ¼” slices and place them on the baking sheet. Bake for three hours, turning halfway through. When the time is up, remove from the oven, cool completely and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
Resolve to be resolute about your resolutions and you and your pet will be happier, healthier, smarter and less stressed when 2021 roles around!
