Starting daycare is exciting and nerve-wracking for dogs and pet parents alike. With all of the new scents, sights, friends, and activities that come with a new environment, preparing for a strong start is essential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without a strong foundation and preparation, pups can often find themselves overwhelmed, nervous, or on edge, which can lead to anxiety around daycare. In this blog, we\u2019ll go over some of the most effective ways to prepare your pup for a great first day and ease them into their daycare routine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clear the Calendar\u00a0<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Prior to scheduling your Meet and Greet, we recommend clearing your schedule as much as possible for your appointment. While it can be hard to find the time away from work, being stressed and in a rush also stresses out your pup. Dogs are incredibly perceptive to emotions and often take on some of their owners\u2019 feelings. Coming in stressed to a new environment is a common way that many dogs start off on the wrong paw at daycare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure to make time for your pup\u2019s well-being, as making time and space for your dog for just 1 day ensures that you have a safe place for them to play for the foreseeable future. Try to arrive early to avoid any stress regarding your appointment, and though it is hard, try not to be too nervous! Practice Socializing<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

One of the major benefits and draws for coming to doggy daycare is for dogs to learn to socialize. Especially for younger pups, daycare is often their first time experiencing the company of so many other dogs, and while this is an exciting experience, it can also be a lot to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If possible, finding ways to start practicing some socialization prior to a Meet and Greet is a good way to set up your pup for success. Whether you find a local playgroup or take your dog to the park, having small and controlled interactions with others gets dogs in the habit of being around other furry friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even for older dogs who haven\u2019t had much socializing experience in their life, it is good to warm up to socializing through other methods before coming to daycare\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Control Your Variables<\/b><\/p>\n

Routine is a crucial part of a dog\u2019s well-being. Having a set schedule, a familiar environment, and repeated stimuli ensures that dogs stay healthy and keep their mind stimulated, and daycare provides just that. However, the first day is also an introduction to a whole new world of fun, excitement, and enrichment, which can often be a bit overwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this, major changes in a dog\u2019s typical routine can make dogs nervous and more susceptible to struggling during their initial Meet and Greet. To prevent this, it is important to keep your dog\u2019s routine consistent leading up to your appointment. For example, make sure that any vet visits required before daycare are done well in advance. If your pup thinks their first day at daycare is just like the vet visit they had a day earlier, it may cause them to be on edge, nervous, or otherwise closed off to making new friends. Other major examples include recent moves, changes in ownership, or the loss of a loved one. The more you can keep your dog\u2019s schedule consistent leading up to your Meet and Greet, the more likely they are to come in excited and ready to make new friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though these steps are not <\/span>required <\/span><\/i>prior to your Meet and Greet, doing as many of these as possible is the best way to set up your pup for success. Coming into your appointment calm, excited, prepared, and focused is a surefire way for your dog to make a great first impression and come home excited for their daycare journey ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
