Did you know that even fully vaccinated dogs can get colds too? \u00a0Doggie daycare is very similar to a child’s daycare and, although we have a stringent cleaning protocol, some germs may still spread. \u00a0Dogtopia of Viera commits to keeping your dog safe and healthy. \u00a0In any social environment where dogs interact, canine cough can occur. \u00a0Similar to a cold in humans, canine cough is caused by an airborne bacteria or virus. \u00a0These contagions spread through contact with infected dogs.<\/p>\n

what is canine cough?<\/h3>\n

Canine cough, an infectious bronchitis, presents as a harsh and hacking cough. \u00a0It may seem like your dog is trying to cough something up. \u00a0Just like the common cold in humans, canine cough is a mild illness that normally resolves quickly. \u00a0A dog with canine cough typically has no fever and maintains a normal activity level and appetite despite coughing. \u00a0For more information please visit https:\/\/www.avma.org\/resources-tools\/pet-owners\/petcare\/canine-infectious-respiratory-disease-complex-kennel-cough<\/a><\/p>\n

Canine Cough Treatment<\/h3>\n

Canine cough typically resolves on its own, but your veterinarian may have treatments they wish to administer. \u00a0Antibiotics may treat bacterial infections, and cough suppressants can provide comfort during natural recovery. \u00a0Often, treatment is not necessary, but always seek the advice of your veterinary professional to see if medication is warranted.<\/p>\n

prevention and mitigation<\/h3>\n

Dogtopia of Viera commits to preventing the spread of germs in our facilities. \u00a0We sanitize our playrooms using Dogtopia’s dog safe cleaning program twice daily and spot clean through the play day. We change and refresh water bowls hourly with clean sanitized bowls, our HVAC system never recirculates air and uses a UV emitter to kill germs before they can enter the playrooms.<\/p>\n

Vaccines<\/h3>\n

Because dogs can get colds too, Dogtopia of Viera has a very strict vaccine policy. \u00a0Our facility requires all dogs to be up to date on vaccines. \u00a0The Bordetella\u00a0<\/em>vaccine, commonly referred to as kennel cough, offers protection from contagious bacteria and a few viruses. \u00a0We strongly recommend the canine influenza vaccine.<\/p>\n

don’t vaccines prenvent canine cough?<\/h3>\n

Although vaccines help prevent or minimize symptoms and transmission of some causes of canine cough, a fully vaccinated<\/em><\/strong> dog can still get a cold. \u00a0There are many germs that can cause canine cough. \u00a0Additionally, some canine cough vaccines will protect a dog from the bacteria Bordetella as well as two other viruses, adenovirus and parainfluenza. \u00a0Surprisingly, vaccines prevent only about 40% of what causes canine cough.<\/p>\n
