In the summer of 2013, I packed up my life in Oklahoma and headed west with Bently riding shotgun in my little sedan. He endured the miles patiently, listening to whatever audiobooks I plugged in, sharing honey graham snacks, watching out the window for cows and prairie dogs. I stopped at a motel in Albuquerque, where he spent the night standing on the bed facing the window on full alert. Neither of us got much sleep that night.

The next day, as I finally steered my car in to the parking area of my new home in Phoenix, he stood up and started wagging his tail with a giant grin on his face. It’s as though he knew that he and I had just started on a new adventure, and he was ready to make the best of it. After hauling in whatever belongings I had managed to cram into my car, I loaded him back into the front seat and we went for a celebratory ice cream cone. That night, he snuggled up next to me and snored for hours. He knew we were “home.”
Bently has become the very best desert dog: He’s embraced xeriscaping, paletas, and–most importantly–the never-ending sunshine. Starting over in a new place is challenging, but it’s far more fun with a good dog at your side.
