Shorter days and freezing temps don’t mean your dog has to miss out. Daycare at Dogtopia of South Elgin gives pups supervised, climate-controlled play and enrichment so they stay active, social, and mentally engaged when outdoor time is limited. Our Canine Coaches run safe, size- and temperament-matched playgroups that help reduce boredom and lead to calmer evenings at home.

When you do take walks or quick outings, watch for these cold-weather hazards and how to prevent them:

  • Salt, ice melt, and chemicals can irritate paws and be toxic if ingested. Wipe paws with a damp towel after walks; use pet-safe booties or a paw balm for protection.

  • Frostbite — ears, tail tips, and paw pads are most vulnerable. Keep outdoor time short in extreme cold and return indoors at the first sign of pale or hard skin.

  • Hypothermia — shivering, weakness, slow breathing. Bring dogs inside immediately, warm them slowly (with a blanket or a warm water bottle wrapped in cloth), and call your vet if symptoms persist.

  • Ice balls between toes — remove gently and dry paws; paw wax can reduce buildup.

  • Cracked or dry paw pads — regular moisturizing balms help; avoid prolonged contact with icy surfaces.

  • Antifreeze and other toxins — store chemicals safely; even small amounts of antifreeze can be deadly.

  • Visibility & early darkness — use reflective gear and short, supervised routes in well-lit areas.

  • Breed & age sensitivity — short-coated breeds, seniors, and puppies need shorter, more frequent outings or protective coats/booties.

For outdoor walks, we recommend a stroll at Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve, Bowes Creek Greenway, or Schweitzer Woods. Just keep it brief when temperatures drop.
