With the fall colours blooming around it is a great time of year to embark on hikes and what a great way to enjoy an afternoon with your pets! Before you hit the trails, here are a few things you will want to do before hand.

Gear Up! You know you will want to bring a hat, comfortable shoes and a second pair of sox. Probably some sun glasses as well. For your pup, you will want to bring a leash, maybe two depending their recall skills. A reflective harness or vest will help you spot your furry firend if they get too far into the bush. A bell on their collar will also help you hear them if you loose sight of them for a moment. A pop-up water dish with a carbiner will come in handy and you can conserve water this way instead of trying to pour water onto their tongue and watch it spill all over the ground! A bug spray may also be a useful tool if you stumble into swampy territory!

Plan Ahead – Always let someone know where you are going and how long you plan on being hiking for. Cell phones do not always get reception and it is hard to charge a dead battery on a maple tree! Ensure your pets license has been renewed. This is one of the best ways to ensure your pet is returned to you quickly in the event they chase after something faster than you and can’t find their way home. Bring a map of the area you are hiking with you. Back at the car, stock it with some extra water and food. Another pair of shoes in case yours found a hidden marshland and a towel for your pet.

Follow the Rules – This includes looking out for whether your dogs are required to be on leash. Picking up after your pet is always in fashion! Obey signage, especially the ones that say “Keep Out” or “Danger”. Keep your pet close to you when approaching cliffs, banks, running water. The water may look calm on top but may have a strong undertow.

Don’t forget to have fun, and bring a camera! We hope you enjoy hiking with your pets, and hopefully these reminders will keep you all safe and having fun. Make sure to take lots of pictures!
