December at Dogtopia:  Keeping Your Pup Safe & Festive This Holiday Season

The holidays are here!  Twinkling lights, tasty treats, and festive cheer — December is magical, but the holidays can also pose hidden dangers for our curious pups.  Let’s keep tails wagging safely this season!

Holiday Safety Tips for Your Dog

The holiday season comes with a few hidden hazards that can pose serious risks to your furry family members.  Keep these tips in mind:

  • Ornaments & Tinsel:  Shiny tinsel and glass ornaments may look festive, but they can be deadly if ingested.  Dogs are naturally curious and playful — a single bite could cause an intestinal obstruction or worse.  Consider placing ornaments higher on the tree and avoid tinsel entirely if your pup has a knack for snacking.

  • Lights & Cords:  Keep cords out of reach or use protective coverings.  Chewing on electrical cords can cause burns, shocks, or even start a fire.

  • Holiday Plants:  Poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and some evergreens can be toxic.  Stick to pet-safe greenery or artificial plants within paw’s reach.

  • Food Caution:  Rich desserts, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are harmful to dogs.  Stick to pup-safe treats instead!

Festive Pet-Friendly Cookies

For those who love to bake for their pups, here’s an easy, safe, and holiday-inspired cookie recipe:

Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Holiday Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin (plain, no spices)

  • ½ cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour or oat flour

  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Mix pumpkin and peanut butter until smooth.

  3. Add egg and flour, stirring until dough forms. Roll dough ¼ inch thick.

  4. Use holiday-themed cookie cutters (trees, bones, stars) and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until firm. Cool completely before serving.

Your pup can enjoy these cookies safely while you sip on your cocoa!
