If you’re thinking about dog daycare for the first time, the process can feel a little unclear.

Do you just show up? Do you need an appointment? What does your dog actually need before getting started?

At Dogtopia of North Austin, we’ve made it simple. Most dogs can get started in just a day or two – some even the same day!   Here’s exactly how it works—so you can move forward with confidence.

Step 1: Make Sure Your Dog Meets the Basic Requirements

Before your dog can attend daycare, there are a few important requirements to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all dogs:

  • Up-to-date vaccinations (Rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP.  We also strongly recommend canine influenza.)
  • Dogs must be at least 12 weeks old or fully vaccinated – whichever comes first.
  • Dogs over 7 months must be spayed or neutered

These requirements are standard across quality daycare facilities and help protect every dog in our care.

Important: Most delays come down to vaccination records. Once we have those on file, everything moves quickly.

Step 2: Book Your Dog’s Meet & Greet

Every dog’s first visit starts with a Meet & Greet—and it’s required for all new dogs.

This is one of the most important parts of our process. It allows us to safely introduce your dog to our environment and make sure they’re a great fit for group play.

For local dogs who will be attending daycare regularly, the Meet & Greet is complimentary.

If you’re visiting from out of town or need care right away, we can still get your dog started—but the visit will be charged at the full daycare rate. Your dog will still go through our Meet & Greet process to ensure a safe and positive experience.

Every dog goes through the same evaluation—no shortcuts.

Step 3: What Happens During the Meet & Greet

We know leaving your dog somewhere new can feel like a big step, so here’s what to expect:

  • A gradual introduction to our playroom
  • Supervised interaction with other dogs
  • Close observation by our trained team

Every dog is different. Some jump right in, while others take a little time to warm up. Our goal is to ensure your dog feels comfortable, confident, and set up for success.

Step 4: Schedule Your Dog’s First Full Day

Once your dog successfully completes their Meet & Greet, you’re ready to schedule daycare.

From there, many of our dog parents:

  • Start with a few days per week
  • Build a consistent routine
  • Add boarding or spa services as needed

Our team is happy to help you find the right schedule based on your dog’s energy level and your routine.

Step 5: What to Expect After Getting Started

One of the biggest benefits of daycare shows up after that first visit.

Many dog parents notice:

  • Improved behavior at home
  • Better socialization with other dogs
  • A calmer, more balanced dog overall

Daycare isn’t just about supervision—it’s about structured play, engagement, and giving your dog a healthy outlet for their energy.

Common First-Time Questions

Can I just drop my dog off for the first time?
No. Every dog must complete a Meet & Greet first to ensure safety and compatibility.  We ask that you come in, answer a few questions about your pup’s history and behavior, and then we can answer any questions you might have about what will happen throughout the day.

Is the first day free?
The Meet & Greet is complimentary for local dogs who will be attending daycare. If a full day of care is needed right away, the standard daycare rate applies—but your dog will still go through the Meet & Greet process.

How quickly can I get started?
In many cases, same-day or next-day appointments are available—as long as we have your dog’s vaccination records (Rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP).
