Foundation. Thanks to the generous support of our amazing Towson dog owners, Anchor has embarked on an incredible journey to become a life-changing companion for United States Navy veteran Jeff.

A Solid Foundation in New Milford, New Jersey

Under the loving care of his volunteer puppy raiser in New Milford, New Jersey, Anchor mastered crucial foundational cues. His socialization and exposure to diverse environments—from bustling train rides and movie theaters to office settings and schools filled with children—have prepared him for the next phase of his training. These experiences have given Anchor the confidence to handle a variety of situations, laying the groundwork for his future success as a service dog.

Graduation with Canine Companions

Anchor’s journey reached a heartwarming milestone at Canine Companions’ graduation, a special event where children, adults, and veterans with disabilities are paired with their service dogs. It was here that Jeff and Anchor officially became a team, ready to face the world together. This marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership, with Anchor now by Jeff’s side to provide support, independence, and peace of mind.

The Impact of Your Support: Jeff and Anchor’s Story

Anchor’s training goes beyond helping with Jeff’s symptoms of PTSD—he’s been taught to detect signs of anxiety or distress and perform tasks that help disrupt and alleviate these symptoms.

In crowded public spaces, Anchor creates a comfortable barrier to reduce Jeff’s anxiety. He’s also learned how to interrupt nightmares, turn on lights in dark rooms, and retrieve items, enhancing Jeff’s quality of life and daily routine.

In Jeff’s words:
“Anchor will help me be able to resume activities that I’ve had issues with in the past…helping me be more comfortable in large groups. THANK YOU from my family and me!”

The Road to Professional Training

Anchor’s journey began with enriching socialization and puppy classes, but his path to becoming a fully certified service dog required advanced training. After spending time with his dedicated trainer Kimberly, Anchor excelled in learning an impressive range of tasks—from opening doors and picking up dropped items to providing comfort and calming anxiety. His skills have made a remarkable impact, and he’s now fully prepared to support Jeff as his forever companion.

Team Training: A Life-Changing Partnership

In Medford, New York, Jeff and Anchor participated in an intensive two-week Team Training program. From day one, Jeff had the chance to interact with several service dogs, but by the second day, Anchor had already won his heart. Over the course of the training, Jeff and Anchor practiced real-world scenarios, from public outings to everyday routines at home, growing stronger as a team.

The final day of training culminated in both a written and practical exam to ensure that Jeff and Anchor are prepared to take on life’s challenges together. Jeff also gained valuable knowledge about continuing Anchor’s training, making this partnership one built on mutual trust and learning.

At Dogtopia of Towson, we are incredibly proud to support Anchor and veterans like Jeff through the life-changing work of the Dogtopia Foundation and Canine Companions. Together, we are empowering lives—one paw at a time.

Thank you for being part of this journey!
