Stamford-Downtown Service Dogs

Even Heroes Need Heroes

We are committed to uniting service dogs with military veterans. We do this by generating awareness of the benefits of service dogs, and hosting fundraisers throughout the year so we can help sponsor their training. Thanks to the continuous generosity of our pet parents and community supporters, we're making an impact.

We're honored to highlight our furry, four-legged heroes who have graduated from training as loyal, hardworking companions for the brave men and women who served our country. It's hard work to become a service dog for a veteran and only the best make the cut. The need for service dogs among veterans is great and with your support, we hope to sponsor many more.

Woof,Woof!
Valor here, coming at you with another PUPdate! I'm so excited to tell you how I’m doing in my training! Every day I learn new things that help me become the best service dog for my veteran. I used to show hesitation when I had to go to new places that are a bit more crowded and louder than the typical daily grocery store, but now I’m getting good at it! My Trainer helps me understand that it’s okay to explore new spaces, even if they seem a little bit loud or crowded at first.  I’m building up my bravery, little by little so I can be the most confident pup for my warrior!
I’ve also been learning how to work and perform my expected obedience & service cues with other trainers. This is called “handler transferability”, this helps so when I get paired with my warrior, I am comfortable performing my service cues when needed and have good obedience with them consistently. Sometimes we can get too comfortable working with one handler, so they like to have us train with other trainers to prepare us better & more confidently.
Each day, I get better at being there for my veteran, and I know that all this training will help me take care of them. I can sense that my future veteran is going to need me, and that makes me feel so proud! Thanks to your support, I get to be the dog they need to feel safe and supported. Every breakthrough in training brings me closer to my important job. I can’t wait to meet my new best friend and be their service dog! Thanks for helping me get one step closer every day!
Sending you tons of tail wags and sloppy kisses,
Valor
