When walking your dog, it’s so important to be prepared for anything so you and your dog are both comfortable and cared for on your adventure. Here are some things you might consider bringing:

An appropriate leash is essential for controlling your dog and ensuring they keep out of mischief.   Ensure your dog wears a well-fitted collar or harness, with tags containing your contact information.  Be a good neighbor and always clean up after your dog. Bring enough poop bags to pick up any messes during the walk.  Keep your dog hydrated and cool on hot days. Bring a water bottle and a collapsible bowl for easy drinking.

Treats can be a really fun way to train when walking your dog or used as a reward.  A basic first aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries or cuts. Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers are great to have, you never know when the need will arise!  If walking at night in low visibility conditions, make sure to wear reflective gear for yourself and your dog so you stay visible to drivers.   It’s always a good idea to have a spare leash in case one breaks or gets lost.

A whistle or sound maker is so useful for getting your dog’s attention in exciting situations.  Dogs can get sunburned too!  If your dog has a light-colored coat, consider applying pet-safe sunscreen to prevent sunburn.  Carry contact information for your vet in case of emergencies.  If you’re going for a long walk, you may want to bring snacks or water for yourself too.
