Even a single bite from an infected mosquito can introduce heartworm larvae into a dog’s bloodstream, leading to a potentially fatal condition as the parasites develop and reside in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Symptoms of mosquito bites on dogs can resemble those in humans, appearing as raised, red, and itchy bumps. Dogs may lick or scratch these bites, which can lead to skin infections or hot spots. In some cases, dogs can experience an allergic reaction, manifesting as swelling, difficulty breathing, stomach upset, and other signs of anaphylaxis, requiring immediate veterinary attention.
